I would give it five stars but for two things--- (1) occasional speaker pop on power-up (easily resolved if you use a delay circuit or just turn your power amp/receiver on last when powering up your system), and (2) limited programming/playback options---there doesn't seem to be any way to set the unit to play just a single CD straight through (without creating a program containing all the tracks of that CD). The error-correction algorithms are excellent---I played some badly scratched CDs that other players could not handle and could barely hear the data interpolation at the scratch points. Bottom line, this is a GREAT bargain in Red Book changers, well worth searching out used or as a liquidation special since it seems to have been discontinued and not replaced with an improved model (what is JVC thinking). Nice controls, a solid chassis, easy to use remote. The standout feature for me is that the transport is absolutely silent when playing---no hiss or hum from the motors (I mean if you put your ear up to the component itself---not the lack of noise on the audio outputs, which should be a given with any but the cheapest disc player). The internal DAC is not bad, and of course the optical output lets you hook up your DAC of choice.
Nice cd player, I have owned it for a while and I have had no problems, I replaced a single disc player so I really like this 5 disc one.
Few local stores carried this type of CD changer, so Amazon is definitely the way to go. It is easy to work and has just the features I needed. After many years of faithful service, I finally had to replace my old Sony 5 disc changer. I looked at the available options and this one came the closet to what I had before. Price couldn't be better either.
Unlike the dissonant cacophony of today's garbage. I have one particular Jim Reeves CD disc that would not play on any other CD player that I tried, either at home or on my car CD player. I purchased the JVC XL-FZ258BK about 10 months ago and like other reviewers have commented, I don't understand the negative reviews. Its an integral part of our home theatre system which consists of the Samsung LN-4661F flat panel LCD, Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver, Infinity Beta 40 fronts,Infinity C250 center channel,Infinity 300 Watt Subwoofer, and three Infinity TSS-1200 satellite speakers. They all simply said " No Disc." The FZ258BK came through like a champ.Oh and by the way, for you young people who have no idea what music is supposed to sound like; Jim Reeves sang real music.
I love this changer, it does everything I want it to do. It can do random playing as well as straight forward and continuous play which means I can listen to a variety of music for hours.
